⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Fu Inubozaki
Age: 15
Canon: Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru
Canon Point: End of Episode 4

Background:

Fu was the eldest child of the Inubozaki household. Her parents worked for the Taisha, an organization dedicated to the Shinju, humanity’s guardian deity and savior. Along with her younger sister Itsuki she lived a pretty normal life up until the battle of the Great Seto Bridge in which the Vertex, invading monsters, attempted to launch an attack on the Shinju. That day both of her parents perished while evacuating civilians from the area. To the rest of the world it had simply been labeled a calamity, a freak accident that had caused the collapse of the bridge. After all, no one knew about monsters called the Vertex. A then thirteen year old Fu was faced with the reality that she had become an orphan. The Taisha had personally informed her of the incident and in exchange for her parents sacrifice, along with Fu’s future cooperation, they would provide financial support for the Inubozaki sisters. And so life went on.

Nearly two years passed without incident. Fu raised Itsuki and continued her studies while maintaining contact with the Taisha and under their instruction she formed the Sanshu Middle School Hero Club. The club was a cover for the Taisha to assemble a group of girls with the highest statistical likelihood to become Heroes. Fu was told to recruit Yuna Yuki and Mimori Togo as they had a high aptitude like herself. The girls spent most of their days doing good deeds and offering help to anyone in need. Time passed and the possibility of them being called upon to become Heroes seemed to diminish.

Eventually Itsuki joined the Hero Club and not long after this the girls were called upon to fight. Fu was put in a difficult position as she was the only one who knew what was going on. In the wake of their first encounter with a Vertex, she explained the truth of the Hero Club to the girls. Togo did not respond well to having been kept in the dark for so long, but by the time of their second encounter with the Vertex they had made amends.
Eventually the Taisha sent Karin Miyoshi, a fully trained Hero to support the new Heroes and if necessary, replace Fu as their leader. Despite feeling initially threatened by Karin’s presence, Fu eventually came to accept and respect Karin, though they would still clash on several occasions.

As the battles against the Vertex grew more fierce Fu was forced to activate her Mankai for the first time, gaining tremendous power. Using the combined abilities of the five Heroes, four of whom had used Mankai, they were able to easily defeat an all out attack by the Vertex. In the aftermath of the battle it was discovered that each of the girls who had used Mankai had acquired a peculiar injury. Fu lost sight in her left eye, Yuna lost her sense of taste, Itsuki lost her voice, and Togo lost hearing in one ear. The Taisha assured them that these were simply the after effects of the Mankai and that they would eventually heal on their own. The terminals which allowed the girls to transform were then taken by the Taisha and it was believed that the Heroes fight had finally ended.

For a time, life went on as usual. The girls even took an all expenses paid vacation courtesy of the Taisha. But soon after they were informed that there were still a few Vertex left to fight and so their terminals were returned. As their injuries still hadn’t healed and to prevent further sensory loss, the girls made a pact not to use the Mankai again. Fu, however, felt guilty for what had happened to her friends and so she secretly decided that if they needed to use Mankai again, then she would be the one to do it in order to spare her friends. Fu continued to pester the Taisha about their progress on finding a solution for the injuries, but they continually reassured her to wait.

Fu was later informed about the truth behind Mankai and the entire Hero System by Yuna and Togo who had in turn received the information from a former Hero, Sonoko Nogi. In exchange for using the Shinju’s power during Mankai it would take a part of the Hero as a sacrifice. The sacrifice was permanent. Togo had also figured out the true purpose of the Fairies; they were not only meant to protect the Heroes, but also bind them to their duty. In other words they would prevent them from dying, even through suicide. Thus it was discovered that Heroes were doomed to fight and lose themselves piece by piece.

That cruel discovery combined with the guilt of having assigned her friends and family such a horrible fate by creating the Hero Club was too much for Fu to cope with. Enraged and grief stricken, Fu resolved to destroy the Taisha for lying to them and using them as sacrifices. She was intercepted by Karin and after a short fight, Yuna and Itsuki managed to talk her down. They convinced her that regardless of the situation, they were grateful to her for making the Hero Club. She later joined with her friends to stop the distraught Togo from destroying the Shinju, and subsequently the world.

Personality:

“The Hero Club’s goal is to do things to benefit people and Society.”

Fu is a very headstrong young woman who approaches everything with boundless energy despite recent tragedies in her life. She has a very affable nature and isn’t shy to express her opinions to others. Her enthusiasm when undertaking any task has a way of spreading to others. This is seen when she is able to convince Yuna and Togo, then complete strangers, to join the Hero Club with only a flier and a speech about being a hero. Her genuinely friendly disposition and willingness to help makes her well-liked by her classmates and she’s even received a few love letters, though she’s never pursued a serious romantic relationship. However she always proudly recounts the story of how she was once asked out in her second year whenever the topic presents itself, much to the dismay of anyone who has heard it before.

If Fu has a true love it is eating and she can consume absurd amounts of food. While she has a large appetite for anything delicious she has a special place in her tummy for udon and can eat four bowls in quick succession and still feel hungry after. Fu can’t seem to handle horror stories of any kind, despite fighting real life monsters. She gets startled easily and is made uneasy just by the mention of ghosts. Togo is aware of this and has used this knowledge to tease her on certain occasions.

Most of the time she behaves in a comically flamboyant fashion in order to lighten the mood or make the other girls laugh but that’s isn’t to say that she doesn’t take things seriously. Beneath all the jokes and ridiculous behavior Fu is actually very mature and considerate for her age. This is the result of becoming her little sister’s legal guardian at the age of thirteen following the death of their parents. Fu took on the responsibilities of both a mother and older sister; clothing, feeding, and helping Itsuki with her schoolwork. Fu does all this without complaint, expressing unconditional love for Itsuki, her only living relative, and is very protective of her. That isn’t to say that she is restrictive with Itsuki, quite the opposite; Fu encourages her sister to try to experience new things and have more confidence in herself.

Being the oldest member of the Hero Club her role as a big sister often extends to the rest of the club members as well. Fu is very close to each of the girls and cherishes them all, doing her best to guide and encourage them when they need her to, both as Heroes and teenagers. Fu has a deep sense of responsibility as the founder of the Hero Club and she ultimately feels accountable if things go wrong and her friends are hurt, despite assurances to the contrary. Because of this she was initially hesitant of her ability to lead her fellow Heroes in the battle against the Vertex and was often at odds with Karin over the possession of this role but she eventually embraced it, claiming that it was her role and her purpose.

In contrast to her usually sincere temperament Fu can be secretive when she believes it will spare others unnecessary strain or heartache. She initially kept the truth of the state of the world from her friends and sister because she thought there would have been no point in turning their lives upside down given that there was a chance that her team would never be chosen as Heroes and therefore could have lived out their whole lives in ignorance. Even after the girls became aware of the situation Fu chose to withhold worrying information in order to spare her friends the anxiety while subsequently taking it onto herself; she would rather suffer alone than cause her friends any pain. This habit, along with her feelings of guilt stemming from leading her friends into peril, later proved to be overwhelming when Fu discovered the truth behind the effects of Mankai; that her sister’s voice loss was permanent and that the Taisha lied about her recovery. Distraught by these revelations she set out to annihilate the Taisha requiring the combined efforts of Karin, Yuna and Itsuki to calm her down.

Overall Fu is a very compassionate girl who tries her best to keep the people she loves happy and safe. For their sake she would wage war against any enemy by herself, but she’s grateful that she doesn’t have to. Even though the formation of the Sanshu Middle School Hero Club was merely a front, Fu truly believes in its ideals and its purpose of helping others.

Abilities:
Hero Form
Through the use of a phone app, Fu is able to transform into a Hero. This is essentially a magical girl transformation that grants her enhanced strength and durability as well as the ability cover vast distances by jumping. If enough damage is sustained the Hero Form will disengage.

Fairies
A staple of the current generation of Heroes. The fairies act as a defense mechanism of the Hero granted by the Shinju. Their primary purpose is to protect the hero from any and all harm, including the self inflicted sort. They manifest as a different small animals or spirits and also grant different abilities to the Hero based on the fairy. Fu has two by the end of canon but will only enter the game with Inugami.

Inugami – a steely-eyed blue dog-like fairy who allows Fu to wield her primary weapon, a huge greatsword the size of which she can alter at will. The enhanced strength of her Hero Form allows her to wield this weapon with ease.
Kamaitachi – a mischievous sickle weasel spirit who grants Fu the ability to manifest and throw daggers which immobilize whatever they hit.

Mankai
The Hero’s trump card. Mankai is the ultimate expression of power that the Shinju can grant to a Hero. It is charged by continuous use of the Hero Form although this can be subverted by the Hero’s own willpower. Once charged the Hero can transform into a more powerful form, enhancing all of their abilities and granting them the power to fly. In this form Fu is able to knock a titanic Vertex to the ground in a single hit. Additionally she can further expand the size of her weapon. Like the Hero Form, if enough damage is sustained the Mankai will deactivate.
The power of Mankai, while great, comes at a terrible price; the permanent loss of a bodily function. The highest known number activations of Mankai is twenty and the user was rendered bedridden with the loss of nearly all of her bodily functions.

Alignment: Thras

At this point in canon Fu is still adjusting fully to the reality of the situation. She’s afraid for her friends but has resolved to lead them into battle.

“Day number four!” Fu exclaimed while making a note on a scrap of paper she’d been using to keep track of her time on the island.

The blonde teenager buzzed around the kitchen of the small house she’d been assigned to, picking up things which she’d scattered around during the previous night. Lifting a sandwich which she had prepared earlier in the morning she broke a corner of it off and fed it to the floating blue dog beside her.

“Eat up Inugami, it’s almost time to continue our manhunt.”

They weren’t actually going to be hunting anyone, it was simply Fu’s way of saying they were going to be looking for the rest of the Hero Club members again today. She moved to the living room, picking her phone up from the table. The screen was blank, showing that the device was turned off to conserve battery power, but Fu would turn it on every thirty minutes to check for messages. She wasn’t certain she would receive any but the phone had worked inside the Jukai, so there was a chance it could work here too, or so Fu hoped.

While retrieving her phone Fu glanced over the three identical potted flowers sitting atop the table. She had acquired them the day before to liven up her rather dull accommodations. As she stood there contemplating how she would care for the plants, her thoughts drifted to Itsuki and what her sister could be doing right then. It frightened Fu to think that she might be alone and lost in this place and the flowers seemed to mirror these feelings as they suddenly began to wilt.

“H-Hey! Don’t do that! I’m sure I watered you guys! Don’t just die on me all of a sudden!”

Panicking didn’t seem to help, if anything it made them wilt faster. It had all happened too quickly, there was nothing Fu could do. For a long moment she stared pensively at the remains of the flowers, noticing that a crack had begun to form on one of the pots. Fu glanced at Inugami, who had floated over to her side.

“They’re okay, right?”

She wasn’t talking about the flowers, but whether the fairy understood that, or even cared, was imperceptible. Fu slapped her cheeks with both hands and shook her head, as though it would expel her negative feelings.

“I guess we won’t find out if we just stand here looking at cheap flowers all day!”

That was right; there was no point in moping over something when she could go out and do something about it. Scooping up her backpack she headed to the front door and then outside into the early morning.

“Sanshu Middle School Hero Club President, Fu Inubozaki! Heading out!” She bellowed before setting off down the street.
